CASE STUDY: World Humanitarian Day – UNAA NSW

Updated: Dec 8, 2025

World Humanitarian Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 and first observed in 2009. Held annually on 19 August, the day commemorates the tragic bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, where UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Sergio Vieira de Mello and 20 others lost their lives.

Each year, organisations around the world mark this day through a variety of events, from fundraisers to educational lectures, all aimed at raising awareness of humanitarian work and recognising those who dedicate themselves to saving lives and providing relief to those in need. In 2023, UNAA NSW chose to honour the courage and compassion of humanitarian workers, with a particular focus on how technology can enhance aid efforts and support vulnerable communities.

Our Brief

We were engaged to source a speaker with a refugee background who could share a compelling and inspiring story. Our recommendation of Dr Munjed Al Muderis – renowned surgeon and humanitarian, was embraced by UNAA NSW, perfectly reflecting the spirit of World Humanitarian Day. Beyond speaker sourcing, we managed all aspects of the event, from planning to execution, ensuring a seamless and impactful experience for attendees.

Scope of Work

  • Event Strategy: Developed the overarching approach to the event, aligning content, speakers, and activities with the theme of humanitarianism and innovation.

  • Content and Format Development: Crafted an engaging program structure and ensured messaging was relevant, inspiring, and accessible.

  • Sponsorship: Identified and managed sponsorship opportunities to support event delivery and engagement.

  • Event Management: Oversaw all operational aspects, including logistics, registration, and on-the-day coordination.

  • Event Coordination: Liaised with stakeholders, speakers and partners to ensure seamless communication and collaboration.

  • Administration: Managed documentation, schedules and correspondence to support the smooth delivery of the event.

  • Event Evaluation: Captured feedback, analysed outcomes and provided insights to inform future events.

Through this collaboration, UNAA NSW successfully delivered an event that not only honoured humanitarian workers but also highlighted the role of innovation in improving global aid efforts, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
